Gerhard Herzberg was born in Berlin, Germany in 1887. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1924 and taught at the University of Jena until 1930, when he returned to Vienna to become a professor at the university's Institute of Psychophysics. In 1934 he accepted a position as professor at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland, where he remained until his retirement
His affiliation with the ETH lasted only four years, however, as he moved back to Vienna in 1937 to teach psychology at the University of Vienna. Herzberg died on January 23, 1968.
